Barcelona's Fermin Lopez Ruled Out for Two Weeks with Soleus Injury

Barcelona have been dealt another injury blow as midfielder Fermin Lopez has been ruled out for approximately two weeks with a soleus muscle injury in his right leg. The Spanish club confirmed the setback, which comes at a critical juncture in their season.

The Injury Diagnosis

Barcelona released an official statement confirming the extent of Lopez's injury: "First-team player Fermín López has a small injury to the soleus muscle in his right leg, and his estimated recovery time is around two weeks."

The 22-year-old midfielder sustained the injury following a forceful challenge from Athletic Bilbao's Oihan Sancet during Barcelona's 4-0 victory over Bilbao. Sancet received a red card for the tackle, but the damage had already been done. Despite the discomfort, Lopez courageously pushed through to start Barcelona's Champions League match at Stamford Bridge, where the Blaugrana suffered a heavy 3-0 defeat to Chelsea.

Matches Lopez Will Miss

The injury comes at the worst possible time for Hansi Flick's side, with Lopez set to miss at least four crucial fixtures:

  • La Liga: Deportivo Alaves (home)
  • La Liga: Atletico Madrid (home)
  • Champions League: Eintracht Frankfurt (home)
  • La Liga: Real Betis (away)

Should his recovery proceed as planned, Lopez could potentially return around December 13 for the home match against Osasuna. However, the club will not rush his comeback, particularly given the recurring nature of soleus injuries.

Impact on Barcelona

Fermin Lopez has been in exceptional form this season, establishing himself as a regular starter under Flick. The Andalusian midfielder has contributed seven goals and four assists in just 13 appearances across all competitions, bringing work rate, energy, and attacking threat to the team.

This marks Lopez's second muscle injury of the season, having previously missed four games between September and October. The timing is particularly unfortunate as Barcelona's injury list had finally begun to shrink, with only long-term absentees Marc-Andre ter Stegen and Gavi still sidelined.

Who Steps Up?

In Lopez's absence, Dani Olmo is expected to feature more prominently in the starting lineup. The former RB Leipzig playmaker has endured repeated injury issues throughout 2025 and will be eager to seize this opportunity to rediscover his top form and stake his claim for a regular starting position.

Additionally, Barcelona will welcome back Pedri, who has returned to training this week and could be available for the weekend clash against Alaves. The Spain international's return provides some much-needed reinforcement for Flick's midfield options during this challenging period.

Season Statistics

This season, Lopez reached a significant milestone by hitting 100 appearances for Barcelona's first team. He achieved the century mark after featuring in 15 matches this campaign, nine of them as a starter. His consistent performances and goal-scoring contributions have made him an integral part of Flick's plans.

Barcelona currently sit second in the La Liga table and will hope to navigate this difficult stretch of fixtures without their in-form midfielder as they chase Real Madrid at the top and look to bounce back from their Champions League setback against Chelsea.
